Melissa Garretson Smith has been teaching group fitness classes for 30 years! What began as a volunteer position to help the owner of a privately owned small gym in the town of her college has grown into a lifetime of assisting people improve the quality of their lives through movement and fellowship.
While not her full-time job, being a group fitness instructor is definitely her favorite job. Melissa works full-time for the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia as the Facilities Director. She is married and has two wonderful children, Lauren and Blake. Her early training for teaching group fitness was provided by being a cheerleader from 3rd grade through her sophomore year at Concord College.
Melissa has been certified in many different genres of fitness over the 30 years – previously certified as a professional Jazzercise instructor, many various American Council on Exercise Certifications (Group Fitness, Medicine Ball, Agility, Balance, Coordination, Sports Conditioning, Combatting Heat Stress, Kickboxing, Building Mental Muscle), and Silver Sneakers. CPR certified.
Melissa currently teaches a class at the Cross Lanes Nautilus known as “Fit and Flex Fitness”. This class is a mixture of cardio and strength training. It is a 55 – 60 minute class that works the entire body. Clients can expect to use various pieces of equipment, work the heart and build muscle, and hear fun music!
